Understanding Biodiversity

Biological diversity, or biodiversity, refers to the entire variety and variability of life forms on earth. It encompasses mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fishes, insects and other invertebrates, along with plants, fungi, and microorganisms such as protists, bacteria and viruses. Biodiversity is expressed at three levels: genetic diversity, species diversity, and ecosystem diversity. Its direct and indirect services are crucial for the sustenance of life on this planet.

Systems protected
  • Genetic diversity
  • Species diversity
  • Ecosystem diversity

Why Biodiversity Matters

Biodiversity ensures food, fuel, shelter, medicines and resources vital to our survival. Natural predators— insects, birds, fungi and other organisms—control many crop pests more safely than chemical pesticides. Numerous flowering plants rely on animals such as insects, bats and birds for pollination and seed dispersal. Biodiversity offers a wide range of resources and services for mankind: diverse species enable livelihood diversification and make round-the-year food production possible.

Objectives of the Board
  • Conservation of biodiversity.
  • Sustainable use of its components.
  • Equitable sharing of benefits arising out of biological resources and associated traditional knowledge.
